READABLE THINGS
(including readable things with pictures)
Cleveland Quixotic |
A Beginner's Guide to the End of the Universe |
self-aware isekai with excellent character writing & setting design. if you've heard of worth the candle, it's that but shorter, punchier, and generally better. |
suggestion-powered webcomic originally posted to the mspaintadventures forums in 2010. guaranteed to contain less than 2% homestuck by weight. |
Has anyone heard of the Left/Right Game? |
Mother Horse Eyes |
r/nosleep story that manages to outperform others in its genre by cleverly subverting the asinine plausibility rules and telling an actually compelling narrative. |
reddit's favorite anonymously guerilla-published nonlinear danielewski-vania. about a lot of things, including alien crab romance. |
17776 |
GODHEAD |
text-and-video story about sports in post-mortality america, starring three sapient space probes. punches (emotionally) above its weight class and wins every time. |
wonderfully stylized and experimental webcomic pushing the boundaries of browser-based art. has music, animation, interactive pages, hovertext narration, 3D screens, et cetera. we're not in 2009 anymore, dorothy. |
The Northern Caves |
The Privilege of the Happy Ending |
unique story about all-consuming obsession, pattern-seeking, and filling in the gaps. not as bombastic as some, but of the type to stick in your brain for months after reading. |
a metanarrative fairy tale about a talking chicken. my favorite of many works by kij johnson. other short stories are available online, or in that rare medium known as "print"; i recommend them all. |
The Grief Complex |
Meanies Comic |
strikingly illustrated picture book for grownups. described by the author as being "about psychic parasitism", and i can't top that. currently awaiting further phases. |
episodic adventures of some color-themed guys. it's fun! can't we just have fun for once. |
Tapers |
Drop-Out |
short novel about, broadly speaking, obsession. it's not just the prototype petscop with petscop characters by the guy who did petscop. please engage with it on its own merits. |
emotionally intense and deeply layered. anything i could describe it as would be selling it short. yeah, it's "a furry roadtrip comic" in the same way a hatchet to the neck is "a sore throat". |
PLAYABLE THINGS
Heisei Pistol Show |
With Those We Love Alive |
punchy neon-coated rpgmaker game that manages to be both absurdly hilarious and emotionally sincere. RM2k jank adds to the charm. |
bridging the gap between "readable thing" and "playable thing", an interactive story set in a dreamlike and macabre world. frankly ahead of its time. |
Our Dirge |
OFF |
(currently in demo) dialogue-centered VNRPG set in a painterly liminal space. personable, precise in scope, and naturally engaging. |
you have definitely already heard about this much-beloved french/belgian indie rpg, but god dammit, go play it (again). |
WATCHABLE THINGS
Petscop |
After Last Season |
chronically misinterpreted video series. captivating, meticulously crafted, represents the distilled and bottled aspirations of every video game creepypasta from the past decade. by the guy who did tapers! |
extraordinarily bad movie from 2009 that fails in literally every aspect. genuinely difficult to watch. holds a special place in my heart and brain for its weird barren sets, clumsy CGI sequences, and incoherent sound mixing. |
